On-Again, Off-Again Relationships: Tracking the Pattern Beyond the Reunion

By Todd Doyle, author of Healing the Shattered: Surviving Narcissistic Abuse

Breaking up and getting back together once is not unusual. A repeated cycle, breaking up, reconciling, breaking up again, following the same pattern each time, is worth looking at as its own thing, separate from any single reunion.

What to Look At Beyond the Reunion Itself

The reunion moment can feel like a genuine turning point every time: intense relief, renewed affection, a sense that this time will be different. The more useful question is what happens in the weeks after. Does the specific problem that caused the last breakup actually get addressed, or does the relationship just resume until the same problem resurfaces?

A Pattern Worth Naming

If you can count several breakups over the same unresolved issue, that count itself is information, regardless of how convincing any individual reunion felt in the moment.

This Does Not Mean Every Reconciliation Is a Mistake

Relationships can genuinely recover from a breakup when real change follows. The distinction is whether anything is different afterward, not whether the reunion itself felt sincere.

What Can Help

Before deciding to get back together again, it can help to write down specifically what would need to be different this time, and to check honestly, later, whether that specific thing actually happened.
