Divorcing & Co-Parenting with a Narcissist

The Golden Child and the Scapegoat: Sibling Roles in a Narcissistic Family

In families shaped by a narcissistic parent, children are sometimes cast into fixed, almost scripted roles. Two of the most commonly described are the golden child and the scapegoat, and understanding both, even if you only lived one of them, can clarify a lot about how the family actually functioned.

The Golden Child

The golden child is held up as the family’s pride, praised publicly, and often used as proof that the parent is doing everything right. This role sounds enviable from the outside, but it usually comes with its own cost: conditional approval, pressure to maintain an image, and little room to have normal flaws or struggles without risking the role itself.

The Scapegoat

The scapegoat is blamed for family problems, criticized more harshly, and often becomes the household’s designated “difficult one,” regardless of actual behavior. This role tends to produce more visible struggle, but also, sometimes, more clarity: the scapegoat often sees the dynamic more clearly precisely because they were never granted the golden child’s protected position.

Neither Role Is Actually Safe

Both roles exist to serve the parent’s needs, not the children’s, and both can shift over time, sometimes suddenly, if a child stops playing their assigned part. Recognizing the role you were given isn’t about assigning blame among siblings; it’s about understanding a family system that wasn’t built around any child’s actual wellbeing.

For more on this dynamic, see Narcissistic Parents Defined, and if you found yourself caretaking emotionally in either role, see Parentification: When a Child Becomes the Emotional Caretaker.
