Narcissistic Abuse Recovery

Rebuilding Self-Worth After Abuse: Small Practices to Try

Woman holding a small glowing candle close to her chest, symbolizing self-worth while dealing with narcissistic abuse

Understanding why you feel worthless after abuse is one thing. Actually rebuilding a sense of self-worth day to day is a different, more practical project. These are specific things to try, not a required sequence, and not a promise of how quickly anything will shift.

Notice One Accurate Thing Daily

Not a forced affirmation, an observation. Something true about something you did, handled, or noticed about yourself that day, however small. The goal isn’t performing positivity, it’s practicing the habit of actually looking for evidence instead of only noticing what feels wrong.

Reconnect With Something From Before

A skill, hobby, or interest that existed before the relationship narrowed your world is often worth revisiting, even briefly. It doesn’t have to become a project. The point is reconnecting with a version of yourself that existed independent of the relationship’s influence.

Practice Receiving, Not Just Deflecting

If a compliment or a kind word makes you want to immediately minimize it, that reflex is worth noticing. Try, just occasionally, letting it land without correcting it out loud.

Set One Small Boundary and Watch What Happens

Pick something minor, where the stakes are genuinely low, and hold a small boundary on purpose. Notice that the relationship with that person, and your own sense of self, survives it. This is practice, not a test you can fail.

Hold the Bigger Idea Loosely

Todd’s own framing for this work is simple: “Choose good for one’s self as often as possible.” Not perfectly, not constantly, just as often as you reasonably can. Small, repeated choices add up more than any single big one does.
